Vladimir Putin has grown in stature over the past 20 years and is now one ofthe world's most powerful leaders. He experienced firsthand the demise of theSoviet Union in 1991 while serving as an operative for the FSB. He worked veryhard over the previous 20 years to restore Russia to its former splendour. As aresult of the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia experienced severe economic catastrophe.
Putin initially concentrated on stabilising Russia by containing its internal
unrest with the intention of annexing the nations of the Soviet Union. Efforts were
taken to assure food safety in Russia, and at the moment it is one of the top
exporters of wheat in the world. Putin put a lot of effort into building a powerful
army that could compete with superpowers. Russia is one of the biggest suppliers
of oil and gas due to its vast reserves, and Europe significantly relies on Russia for
its gas.
After achieving his initial goals, Putin went to his next plan to annex the
former Soviet regions. First, he attacked Georgia and captured portions of its
territory. Then, in 2014, he grabbed Crimea, which was Ukraine's Russian-
dominant province. On 24 February 2022, Russia started heavy bombarding on
Ukraine and entered its heavy artillery inside Ukraine. Initially they thought it
would take some days to conquer the area they wanted.
But after first brutal punch Ukraine regrouped and with the help of western
allies who were sharing intelligence and supplying arms and ammunition managed
to give tough fight to Russian. According to some media reports Russia too has
suffered casualties in great numbers. Large number of Tanks, infantry vehicles,
armored vehicles, fighter jets, helicopters, fuel trucks have also been destroyed by
the Ukrainians.
Russia was forced to withdraw from Kyiv, Kharkiyv, Izyum, Kupinsk,
Vovchansk, and Balakliya after realising how tough the Ukrainian military was.
The four Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donestsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson,
which account for 15% of Ukrainian land, were annexed by Russia during the
current war.
Putin is explicitly threatening to use a tactical nuclear weapon to make up
for the shortcomings of Russian forces in Ukraine. In a speech, Mr. Putin brought
up the possibility once more, branding the US and NATO as adversaries seeking
Russia's demise and reiterating his promise to protect Russian territory with "all
available means"—which he has since announced to include four provinces in
eastern Ukraine.
Putin obviously views the threat of his nuclear arsenal as a tool to induce
terror and perhaps to regain some respect for Russia's authority after a series of
humiliating retreats, astonishingly high death rates, and a highly unpopular
decision to enlist young Russian men into service.
The United States has been pressuring its European allies to aggressively
confront Russia, but so far they have shown reluctant to do so. Oil and gas have
been cut off from Russia, and the war has hampered food supplies, causing
significant inflation in European nations. As winter draws near, things could get
much worse, which would put tremendous pressure on Europe and push them to
engage in a direct conflict with Russia. If this occurs, there is a good chance that a
third world war will break out and that nuclear warheads will be used.
